Mark your calendar now for the 2nd annual Mid-Atlantic Directors and Staff of Scientific Cores (MAD SSCi) meeting to be held June 4-6, 2014, in Baltimore, MD.  This meeting is designed to give directors and staff of core facilities or science departments with shared equipment the opportunity to network and learn from each other and from regional experts, gaining ideas and possible solutions for problems that challenge all of us.

Topics will include a wide range of technologies, including:

  • Imaging
  • Next Generation Sequencing
  • Protein Expression
  • Imaging by Mass Spectrometry
  • Regional Resource Sharing
  • RNA Expression
  • Emerging Technologies
  • Technology Development

Pre-conference satellite workshops will be available at no additional charge for some interesting, practical, vendor specific training. These workshops are especially designed to give senior level technicians and core facility directors access to experience from field applications specialists and other experts. In addition, there will be workshops focused on staff development, including tips for writing shared instrumentation grants and how to write effective SOPs.

Registration includes admission to the opening reception to be held at the National Aquarium in Baltimore, Maryland, and feature opening remarks and a keynote lecture by Dr. Alan Shuldiner on “Core Integration Enabling Genomic Discovery and Translation to Patient Care: Vignettes from the Amish Research Clinic”. The meeting concludes Friday, June 6, 2014 following a second keynote lecture by Dr. Elaine Mardis on “The Perfect Storm: NGS and Cancer Genomics”.

We encourage participants to submit abstracts to present during the poster session on Thursday, June 5th. This offers an excellent opportunity to network with fellow core facility staff.

The meeting, being hosted by the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore, will feature tours of the Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (CIBR), the new organizational framework for the School of Medicine core resources. Many CIBR resources recently moved into 30,000 square feet of renovated space meant to stimulate collaboration and integration of core resources.

Registration is limited to 150 people, and is open to all academic, government and commercial core facility directors and staff, as well as to labs with shared equipment that may not be a formal core facility.
